A LITTLE HISTORY
Mendo Mill & Lumber Company was founded in 1944 by John Mayfield, Sr. and his brother Ross Mayfield. The business was a complete lumber mill with everything from logging equipment to planers and their own trucking fleet. A retail lumber yard was opened on Orr Springs Road in Ukiah in 1946. In 1954, the original lumber mill was sold and John opened a building materials and lumber yard on North State Street in Ukiah. In 1966 Joe Mayfield purchased the business from his father. In 1970 the Ukiah store was expanded to three times its original size. The Home Builders Supply in Willits was purchased by Mendo Mill in 1975 and became the second in a soon-to-be chain of Mendo Mill stores. The Bailey Lumber Company in Clearlake became the third Mendo Mill store in 1979. A fourth store was added with the purchase of Georgia Pacific’s Fort Bragg lumber store in 1984. All four stores are complete home building centers. From foundation bolts to roofing and everything else necessary to finish any job. MENDO MILL DOES IT ALL! Our staff of approximately 160 employees are dedicated, experienced and well educated in the hardware/building supply industry. Many of our employees have been a part of our Mendo Mill family for more than 20 years, while many more are working toward their first 10 years. Our customers are professional builders, handymen and women capable of building their own homes, people needing a new picture hook and every imaginable type in between!
